THC 011: Tiny House Insurance with Paul Bentvelzen

What’s the deal with tiny house insurance? Can you insure it as a tiny house? A caravan? Where do you start?

This is one of those frequently asked about topics, especially for new and curious tiny housers. That’s why today I’m speaking with Paul Bentvelzen who is an insurance broker from Sydney and also has his own tiny house.

I’ve asked Paul to join me on the show as there’s some uncertainty when it comes to tiny insurance and there are also some considerations and limitations in this space that you’ll want to know about, especially if you’re thinking of building or buying a tiny home.

Since Paul works in insurance and has his own tiny home, he’s in a unique position and has some great insights to share with you.

In this conversation we talk about:

  • Different options for insuring a tiny house on wheels (as a caravan) and considerations for tiny houses on foundations
  • Why there are limited options in the market for insuring tiny houses
  • Insurance options for tiny house short-term rentals
  • The limitations and issues with tiny insurance for running it as a business, in a business name and through Airbnb
  • The limitations and issues around offering and advertising other activities such as water sports (canoeing / kayaking etc) and other rural-type activities with your tiny house experiences
  • And more!
