THC 014: Off Grid Solar Systems For Tiny Houses with Matt Porter

So you want to go off the grid in your tiny house and you might be wondering, what kind of solar system set-up and equipment do I need? How much will it cost? And where do I start?

Today I’m speaking with Matt Porter, who is a Standalone Power System Designer, Installer, Battery Tech and Wise Guy from SAE Group (Solar, Aircon, Electrical), who are based in Northern NSW and South-East Queensland.

I was introduced to Matt by my past guests from episode #009, Matt and Kathy McMillan, who are tiny housers from the mid-North Coast of NSW, and had nothing but good things to say about SAE Group.

In this conversation we talk about:

  • Where to start when it comes to an off-grid solar system that suits your needs and wants
  • The basics of how a solar system works and the equipment involved
  • Important considerations and what to look for or ask about when finding a solar company
  • Roof solar panels vs panels on trailers, sheds, or ground mounts
  • An intro to grid-connected solar
  • Lots more!

About Matthew Porter

For over 10 years, Matthew has been at the cutting edge of the off-grid battery storage space. Starting from the ground up with tiny homes and moving into large multi-dwelling sites. He has designed and installed Standalone Power Systems (SPS) for Government Departments, local builders, farmers and residential customers. He holds current Clean Energy Council certification for the Design and Installation of SPS and On-Grid Storage and specializes in batteries.

Matthew is a part of the team at SAE Group and heads up the Standalone Power Systems and Battery aspects of the business. SAE Group’s HQ is in Tweed Heads South with locations at Coffs Harbour, Brisbane and Caloundra.

SAE Group have been in operation for 12 years making them a legacy solar business. SAE Group are CEC accredited retailers, GOLD Class Master Electrician and have achieved ISO Accreditation ISO9001 for quality management and AS/NZS4801 for safety management.

“Helping people achieve energy independence is my passion. I feel that designing systems and installing quality products into people’s homes and providing them with reliable power, where traditional connections are not possible, is my calling. I enjoy empowering our team to build and install quality off-grid power systems and seeing the lights turn on for the first time.

At SAE Group, I have the privilege to immerse myself in the ‘Off-Grid’ genre. SAE Group are the off-grid solar professionals behind hundreds of standalone power systems across Queensland and New South Wales. We have completed projects from the top of Fraser Island to just down the road, on tiny homes and massive multi-dwelling home sites alike. Turning the power on is what we’re about.”
