THC 016: Composting Toilet Experiences (Separett Tiny) with Kathy & Matt McMillan

What kind of composting toilet should I get for my tiny house? This is one of the most common questions I hear and I’ve decided to speak with different people on the show to share their real-life, practical experiences with different models and types of composting toilets.

Kathy and Matt McMillan are tiny housers from the mid-North Coast of NSW and who were on the podcast back in episode #009.

I’ve asked Kathy and Matt to join us again to dive deeper into their own composting toilet experiences with the two different brands they have used, as both toilets work quite differently. The first one didn’t work for them, and the one they have currently (Separett Tiny) IS working for them.

About Kathy & Matt

Kathy and Matt McMillan have been living in their pre-loved tiny house on wheels with their dogs Chloe and Webber since April 2021. They live off-grid, with solar power, rainwater tank, and compost toilet, and believe living this way makes them more mindful of their impact on the environment.

Their tiny is parked on the property where Kathy grew up, on Dunghutti Country in the Mid North Coast hinterland of NSW. The family appeared on the Too Much Stuff episode of the ABC’s Compass program in July 2021, which is still available to view on ABC iView.

Going tiny was a conscious decision to live more sustainably, downsizing to what they really needed, and fuelled by a desire to slow down, live simply, in the peace and quiet of nature.

When living off-grid and managing waste, the couple decided a waterless compost toilet was the most efficient and sustainable way to use less water and recycle waste, which can eventually be used on fruit trees. It makes them uncomfortable using flush toilets now, seeing a precious resource wasted.

The couple do not claim to be experts in compost toilets however they want to share their experiences and some really honest toilet talk, no BS!

In this conversation we talk about:

  • Why Matt and Kathy chose a waterless composting toilet over other toilet options in their tiny home
  • Their first composting toilet and why it didn’t work for them
  • Their current “Separett Tiny” composting toilet, how it works, and why it’s a better option for them
  • All about emptying, consumables, and smells of composting toilets
  • What they’ve learned and wish they knew before buying and using a composting toilet
  • Lots more!
