THC 015: Composting Toilets & Greywater Systems with Anthony Smith

How do you work out what type of composting toilet or greywater system is right for your tiny home?

Today I’m speaking with Anthony Smith who is an Environmental Engineer and the Founder & Director of Water Wally, based in Western Australia. Water Wally are Australia’s leading environmentally conscious wastewater management specialists.

You’ll hear lots of passion and valuable insights from Anthony as we dive into composting toilets, greywater systems, and wastewater management.

In this conversation we talk about:

  • Water as a precious resource
  • The different types of composting toilets and finding the one that works best for your needs
  • Composting toilet ventilation
  • The importance of re-using and responsibly managing greywater
  • The “grey areas” around regulations of wastewater management and composting toilets
  • Lots more!

About Anthony Smith

Introducing Water Wally’s Founder and Director, Anthony (Smitho) Smith: After finishing a degree in Environmental Engineering, Anthony travelled around Australia, often working and living on remote self-sufficient properties. He saw first-hand how living off-grid was an exercise in survival, and how water conservation was essential to this. Things like waterless toilets and reusing greywater played vital roles.

A passion for the environment and water conservation led him to start a landscaping business, specialising in water-wise gardening. Not surprisingly, smarter gardening practices led him back full circle to saving and recycling water by incorporating greywater irrigation and compost creating waterless toilets.

Over the past 10 years, he has worked closely with Tiny Home builders, Tiny Home owners and other Tiny Home-dependant businesses including some of Australia’s largest Tiny Home “eco-tourism” operators.
